Although tic disorders are diagnosed more often in boys, this may not tell the full story. In girls, tics can develop differently, emerge later and more often occur alongside anxiety, low mood or compulsive behaviours—meaning they may be recognised later or overlooked entirely. Greater awareness and more representative research are essential to ensure that girls and women receive timely recognition, understanding and appropriate support.
